Idi Amin was called the ‘Butcher of Uganda’ during his reign of terror from 1971 to 1979. Though no-one knows exactly how many people he had murdered and tortured, it’s estimated that he killed anywhere from 80,000 to 500,000. He even tortured and killed one of his wives.
And even though his brutal actions were well documented by Human Rights organizations, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has his doubts:
“We thought he was a cannibal,” Chavez said on Friday, referring to Amin, whose regime was notorious for torturing and killing suspected opponents in the 1970s. “I have doubts. ... I don’t know, maybe he was a great nationalist, a patriot.” Idi Amin was nuts, and that became increasingly obvious when in 1977 (after Britain severed diplomatic ties with Uganda) he claimed that he was the Conqueror of the British Empire (CBE). And so is Chavez, nuts, that is. That’s probably why he refuses to acknowledge the obvious, and chooses to associate with other crazies like Mugabe and Ahmadinejad, another revisionist. Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust. Chavez doubts Amin’s brutality. Two peas in a pod.
One has to wonder what prompted Chavez to make that statement? Then again, what prompts him to make any of his often asinine remarks. But calling Amin a patriot has Ugandans very upset, and with good reason.
Mary Karoro Okurut, spokeswoman for the ruling National Resistance Movement, said Amin was not worthy of such consideration.
“Anybody who says that Amin was good has something wrong with him,” she said Sunday. “Amin was brutal. He killed many Ugandans and made many run into exile. There is something wrong with whoever praises Amin.” Ms. Okurut, something is definitely wrong with Hugo Chavez, so please consider the source. He has major personality disorders, including narcissism, like many similar despotic leaders. I feel for you, but he’s not worth fretting over. The world knows he’s an idiot and the world also knows the horrors Amin perpetrated against his own people.
We can add N. Korea’s Kim Jong Il to that list. :-)
I don't know why people always jump to the worst conclusions when it comes to Chavez.
Ths same father?? Huh?
